I’ve always been fascinated by the magic of blending, as it has the power to transform a simple sketch into a realistic, stunning piece of art. Today, I’d like to share with you some of my favorite blending tools and techniques that I use in my own work. I’ll go over the following tools: Finger, tissue, piece of cloth or fabric, qtip, makeup brush, and blending stump. And as a little surprise, I’ll reveal my ultimate favorite blending tool at the end!
- Finger: Using your finger is a classic and convenient blending tool that doesn’t require any special equipment. Gently rubbing your finger over your graphite drawing in a circular motion can help to create smooth transitions between shades. However, be aware that the natural oils from your fingers may affect the paper or graphite, so use this technique sparingly.
- Tissue: A tissue is another easy-to-find blending tool that works well with graphite drawings. Simply fold the tissue and use it to softly rub over the graphite, creating a smooth, even blend. This method is particularly effective when you need to cover a large area.
- Piece of cloth or fabric: A soft piece of cloth or fabric can be used as a blending tool, especially for those who want more control over the blending process. By using a small section of the cloth, you can target specific areas and blend with precision. This method works well for both large and small-scale drawings.
- Blending stump: A blending stump, also known as a tortillon, is a cylindrical drawing tool made of rolled paper with a pointed end. This tool is specifically designed for blending and can create extremely smooth transitions in your graphite drawings. By applying gentle pressure and using a circular motion, you can achieve a seamless blend between different shades of graphite.
- Qtip: Last but not least the qtip or cooton swaps are great blending tools. One of the fun things about this blending tool is that everyone – often unknowingly – have them lying around. Face palm: It was there for you to use all along!
And now, for my favorite blending tool…
My Favourite – Synthetic short-haired makeup brush: Surprisingly, my ultimate favorite blending tool is a synthetic short-haired makeup brush! It’s perfect for graphite drawings, as the soft bristles provide an even, smooth blend without damaging the paper or leaving unwanted streaks. Using a makeup brush allows for a more controlled blending experience, and it’s especially effective when working on fine details or delicate shading. Give it a try, and you might just fall in love with it too!
Blending is an essential skill for any graphite pencil artist. Experimenting with different blending tools and techniques can help you find the perfect combination that works best for your unique style. Remember, practice makes perfect, so keep blending and watch your artwork come to life!
IF you don’t have a blending tool, but resort to using your fingers until they bleed… mmh… I mean hurt… then try watching my video on how to make one yourself! It’s not that hard:
